Introduction

Center for Academic Computing (CAC) was established on 23th, Mar. 2010.

Currently we have 51 nodes with 204 cores to support the research of professors and students of College of Applied Science, Kyung Hee University. CAC was established to meet following needs:

  • The global trend of computational science in applied science
  • The demand to increase the number & quality of publication
  • Cost effectiveness of publishing a paper
  • The trend of interdisciplinary science

In the past, only large institute was affordable to have computational system which is composed with too expensive super computer. Now the development of PC hardware enables even a small institute to have their own computation cluster in an affordable budget. Thus CAC was established for following purpose:

  • to prevent duplicated investment by individual professors who need heavy computational work
  • to gather the distributed computing facilities into a single coordinated system
  • to guarantee professional management of cluster by expert

The CAC was mainly funded by College of Applied Science, Kyung Hee Univ. as one of the model business of its self-funding program.

We expect CAC may meet the computational demand for both research and education in the College of Applied Science. We also expect, in the near future, that CAC may have an expanded phase of a computational center in the Global Campus, Kyung Hee University.

Members of College of Applied Science are able to use the cluster. To see the detail read attached file in "Get an Account" tab.

We specially thanks to Kap-sung Kim (College Dean), Kyung-hee Kim(Head of management staff of the college), and Prof. Mincheol Lee for donating several nodes for the cluster.

Future Plan

Our current goal is to stabilize and increase the usage of cluster. Also we expect the cluster can help professors to increase both quality and quantity of paper. Also our future plan is:

  • Increase computing power
    • To fully support the computational demand of the member of College of Applied Science, we require at least 100 nodes (400 cores).
    • To support the computational demand of Global Campus, we require 250 nodes (1000 cores).
  • To attract funds outside like National Research Institute.
  • To attract GRRC or Regional Supercomputer Center for Gyeonggi-do

To achieve these goals, we keeps trying to increase computing power of CAC.

Equipments

CAC have 51 nodes in total and each of them is installed with i7 CPU. Currently CAC server is one of fastest calculation server in Kyung Hee Univ.
